smallfry; i think that you're going overboard with that scenario there; you're kind of assuming that the person is a friendless orphan
just getting back on topic;
have any of you (who are all about 2 years younger than me so don't take this the wrong way) seriously thought about where you want to be in 20 years? and if you want to be married; just ask yourself why. Then think about whether or not it is a lame concept.

I hate plants. I think marriage is pointless, yes. But I don't think love is. I just don't see why you need a piece of paper, or a big ceremony to prove you love someone.

You're completely missing the point of marriage; it's not just a formality; it's a commitment. You may think that things like moving in together can be done without marriage, but if you are choosing to get married, you are choosing to not ever turn back, and you are choosing to join yourself with your spouse. Marriage is a joining of two people into one, and I don't think that you should dismiss it so easily.

It's not really a proof of your love, that's generally made before someone gets married, is it not?

Yeah, I don't think that love should be proved by a ceremony, and if people are married, they should 'prove' their love to each other all the time. In some ways, love is like faith, strong when unproven.

Yes, commitment is great. But why do you need to get married to have a commitment? Marriage itself is just a formality.
