Actually, it's not his real name. He is only known as 'L' to the public, so that no-one learns his real name or identity (he is the world's greatest detective). The only way to get to the world is through his assistant, Watari (that's not a real name either). Watari is the only one that knows L in real life (at the beginning of the anime) and he carries with him a laptop in which L uses to speak to the people at the other end.
THE FOLLOWING IS SPOILERS AND SHOULD ONLY BE VIEWED IF YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT BEING SPOILED:
When L goes to college, he is known as 'Ryouga Hidetoshi' or somethinhg, but that's not his real name either. In fact, it's the name of a famous Japanese star (apparantly).
When L creates the Kira Investigation Team (consisting of Yagami Soichiro, Matsuda, Ainzawa, etc. And later, Light Yagami), he makes himself known as Ryuuzaki to them (because in Japan, 'R' is pronounced like an 'L', and is known by that name during most of the series from then on.
He is also known by the names:
David Coil, *some weird French name I forget* and Lind. L. Tailor.
His real name, however (as learned only when Rem sees his name above his head) is Lawliet.
