Saturday? Sunday? Sabbath?

So, I know people don't like talking about this, but hey what could happen? so yes that's right I brought the topic up. In my opinion the Sabbath (7th day(Saturday)) is the day the bible says to keep holy, however I am absolutely fine with Sunday keepers I it doesn't make me love them any less because they are my friends no matter what.

Well, what does the bible say about the Sabbath?

well I don't want to write out each verse to deeply because you can just look it up for yourself.

Origins of the Sabbath.
In Genesis 2:2-3 as we know, is the 7th and final day of the week of creation however God did not work this day, he rested and the bible says "he blessed the sabbath day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done"

Exodus 16:4, 5, 24-36 it says
Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days." So here in this passage the Sabbath is also commanded to be observed.


Sabbath commandment
Is this not a ten commandment? If not then neither is murder, adultery or thieving! and more.
Exodus 20:8-12 it says
"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

and Exodus 31:12-18 says
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.
" 'Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.' "
When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

was this commandment just crossed out for no reason? I will talk later about who changed the day of church.

Deuteronomy 5:12-15 here it just repeats the commandments again!

Matthew 5:16-20 The fulfillment of the commandments. This is the verse a lot of not sabbath keepers use against us, but read it - it says in verse 17...
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets;I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Now, strangely enough people say to me that seventh-day adventists only follow the old testament but was this passage not from the new testament?

Revelations 1:10 says
On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,
This was when John was there in spirit on the Lords day.

Exodus 20:10 is just God saying again that the Sabbath day is the 7th day.

Leviticus 23:1-3 says
The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. (then in verse 3) - 'There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD.

Mark 2:28 "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

Well that's all the evidence of the Sabbath being the truth that I have found so far but there is probably a bit more.

Please I WANT you guys to tell my WHY you go to church on Sunday and why not keep the Sabbath where is your proof in the bible?

So you can let convenience get in the way of one of the ten commandments, I think its convenient to kill my brother but I don't do that (that was just an example I love my brother). Why bother keeping the rest of them if one is inconvenient, stealing is convenient because you get free stuff.

We had a debate about this yesterday. It's cause Jesus rose or died or something on Sunday... So in the old testament, yes it was a Saturday, but not in the new..

You're wrong. Where does it say that? I just showed you verses from the OLD AND the NEW that show where even Jesus kept the sabbath. Nowhere does it say that the Sabbath day should not be observed. In the NEW testament this is god speaking:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets;I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." - Matthew 5:16-20

Doesn't this tell you anything? that is from the new testament and is talking about the commandments and keeping the Sabbath holy is one of those commandments.
So, could someone please show me WHERE in the BIBLE it says not to keep the Sabbath???

I think it's fine if people atleast have one day for God, I don't go to church but that doesn't mean I am not a christian :/

it does not matter when yuou worshp god, but the sabbath wqas a day of pure love towards god, now, i dont think that the sundayser's or the saterdayer's would spend the entire day in devotion to god, the sabbath was the seventh dayt, and it has importance, but we should worshp god every day, and, jesus accepts those who love and fiopllow him, regardless oof weather or not the liked saterday jesus respected the sabbath, but then, for jesus everey day was a sabbath, there was not much difference, because he spent all his time in worship, jesus came to renew the covenant, by tjhat, he made it that we could worship god directly in our own manner, not in a set procedure

Anyone can write on Yahoo answers...I look to God for my answers and have proof from the bible and NEVER did I or anyone say that if you don't go to church you aren't a Christian, also in the beginning I stated that I don't personally care what day you go to church on you'll (people in general) still be my friend I just want some of your sides of the story. Also about the first quote in Kyouya's post, even though Jesus rose on the Sunday he still kept the sabbath that Saturday and ALSO keeping the Sabbath day holy is one of the TEN COMMANDMENTS. Nowhere does it say the law was ever abolished BY GOD.

Yes you are right we should devote every day to God. However, I do spend the whole Sabbath time period in devotion to God, it starts on Friday when the sun goes down and ends on Saturday when the sun goes down this whole time we don't watch any secular television or read secular books etc. also we go to church that day and don't go anywhere else except sometimes to bible studies etc either at our house or someone else's. This is why I always reject things with my friends on this day but sometimes I do have a friend over or go to a friends house but nothing like shopping, movies etc.

But just take this to thought properly, I feel like it has been ignored:
keeping the Sabbath day holy is a COMMANDMENT. Why do people change it to another day and then not really follow it anyway?
What's the point of keeping all the commandments except one, how about I follow them all except the Idol one, now I will worship 2 Gods and its the same thing...I just don't understand your reasoning with it.

---remember I don't mind when you worship God or if you go to church or not etc etc I am just curious of everyones thoughts and beliefs---


Also I don't judge you guys by what day you worship etc and I think its good that you can find a day to do it if you do..

The idea of worship is central to the sabbath. However, the New Testament seems to put emphasis on a Sunday observance of worship instead of a Saturday one. You've made some good points, however, John 20:26 does state that they were meeting however this could have been just like a Wednesday bible study or may have been that they were meeting over a number of days. Corinthians 16:2 wow that's a long bow, I think its funny that they did not set aside the money on the Sabbath - dealing in money was not something they would do on the Sabbath. Jesus' resurrection doe not change the Sabbath day. These verses you have laid down do not have anything to do with keeping Sunday, also there are many times in the new testament where Jesus kept the Sabbath himself. Revelation 1:10 refers to the Lords day, Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath it does not state that this is the first day of the week, in any case it does not refer to a church service. On a final note Jesus DID NOT change the Sabbath day to Sunday this was done 300 years later by the catholic church who wanted to unite all the religions. Jesus kept the Sabbath throughout the whole bible, never was it changed to Sunday The bible does not even mention Sunday it calls it by the first day of the week and the Sabbath as the seventh.

Probably the most concrete evidence we have that Christians are not compelled to observe a Saturday sabbath is found in Paul's letter to the Colossians. In Chapter 2 we read "Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day: things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ." Clearly the Bible specifically sets believers free from the obligation of keeping the sabbath. Paul says that its purpose was to serve as "a shadow of things to come" - our rest in Christ.

before I blab on more, yea this thread is just about what people believe and why, but I do not judge anyone by their beliefs I just like to know them. I will never be against you or exclude anyone because of different Christian beliefs and perspectives and I hope you don't either.

Now, this is what Frost is trying to say: Did not Paul positively declare in Colossians 2:14-26 that Christ blotted out the 'handwritting of the ordinances', taking taking it out of the way, nailing to the cross, and that no man judge you in what you eat or drink or in respect of a holy day, new moon or Sabbath days?" - (plural).
These verses refer to Sabbath days (plural) not the weekly Sabbath but to those days which were set apart for ceremonies, these ceremonies were nailed to the cross. These ceremonial laws were HANDWRITTEN by Moses and were nailed to the cross, the 10 commandments were written by God in stone.
In verses 27 and 32 of Leviticus chapter 23 other days are spoken as ceremonial Sabbath, in verse 38 Gos states that these are BESIDES the Sabbath of the Lord.
In Colossians 2:17 "are shadows of things to come." These ceremonial Sabbaths pointed forward to Christ and were instituted as a result of sin but the seventh day Sabbath was instituted at creation before sin entered the world.

- Oh just one more thing, I the new testament there are 8 verses that only mention the first day and the first five just mention Jesus' resurrection, so what? also they don't ever mention Sunday but the first day and still it isn't named the Lords day like the Sabbath was. The bible in the new testament there are 64 verses that show the observance of the Sabbath day including when Jesus kept it etc.
